President-elect Obama promised his two daughters a dog for enduring the stress and separation while he was on the campaign trail. Because one of his daughters has pet allergies, his first dog needed to be from a hypoallergenic breed. In the end, he decided amongst two breeds, one being Labradoodles. Labradoodles are great family dogs, have hypoallergenic fur, and are overall beautiful animals. The President-elect has people scouring local animal shelters for Labradoodle puppies, and hopes to avoid purchasing from a breeder.
While purchasing from a Labradoodle breeder would guarantee Obama a gorgeous dog, his decision to adopt an animal from a shelter is more a political decision. Every year thousands of animals are euthanized because pet shelters can’t find homes for them. If people see the new President-elect adopting a puppy, it sends the right message to hopeful dog owners from around the world.
